Apple Pie Spice is a homemade blend of warm, sweet spices used for baking desserts and so much more.

This combination of cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and ginger can be kept stored in the spice cabinet to have on hand for making all of your favorite spiced recipes. I love to use it to make french toast, cinnamon rolls, and these Air Fryer Apple Hand Pies.

Making Homemade Spices

I love fall and all that comes with it and it is the time of year where the warm spice flavors are craved. While pumpkin pie spice seems to get all of the glory, Apple Pie Spice is just as warm and delicious. And, the two are actually very similar as they are made with the same blend of warm spices.

Pumpkin pie spice includes cloves while and apple pie spice sometimes includes cardamom. Cardamon can be difficult find in the store. But, it can easily be found here.

Ingredients

Ground cinnamon is an aromatic condiment used in sweet and savory dishes. And, it has the most volume in this recipe.

Nutmeg, I like to keep whole nutmeg in my spice cabinet. I use a microplane zester to grate what I need for my recipes. I love the aroma, it reminds me highly of homemade eggnog!

Ground allspice is made from berries of the allspice tree. And, contrary to what many think, it is its own spice, and not a blend of spices. It is very pungent and not much is needed.

Ground ginger adds sweet and spicy aroma with a hint of citrus.

Instructions

Making apple pie spice is as easy as apple pie (pun intended!). Just add the spices to a glass jar that will seal tight and shake it up. These cute little storage jars also come with labels to keep you from guessing what is in storage.

When using this spice blend in a recipe that calls for separate spices, substitute with 1-½ teaspoons.

Variations

  • If cardamon is available, add 1-½ teaspoons to the spice mix.
  • Substitute 4 teaspoons of pre-ground nutmeg for the freshly ground nutmeg.
  • Feel free to adjust the amount of ingredients to your own liking.

How To Use This Spice Blend

Apple Pie Spice blend works great in apple filled cinnamon rolls, french toast, and apple crisp.

Wrap the apple spice blend up in a decorative jar. Then, label it and include it as part of a food gift basket along with a pie plate, rolling pin (this marble one is awesome for gifting!), and a bag of apples.

When using this spice blend in a recipe that calls for separate spices, substitute with 1-½ teaspoons. Or, adjust according to taste.
