What do you call boots with thick soles? ›

Boots with large and heavy soles are called “chunky.” They were formerly described as “heavy-duty” footwear for men working industrial jobs and “lace-up combat style” for military servicemen.

Boots often slouch at the ankle because that area is narrower than the calf. One way to prevent this slouching is to the pad the area around the ankle to keep the material from bunching there. Wear tall, thick socks and bunch them, comfortably, around your ankle to fill in the gap between your skin and the material.

The key tradeoff here is that with a thicker-soled and softer shoe, the rate of impact with the ground is slowed – but the duration of the impact lasts longer. So while the maximal force is lower than without cushioning, the total impact force is greater because it lasts for longer.
