JUMP TO RECIPE

This bread dipping oil is going to change your life! It's the best appetizer to make in only 10 minutes and will impress everyone. Serve alongside fresh focaccia or crusty bread to make the best combination.

Bread Dipping Oil (1)

Bread dipping oil is having its moment across social media and I'm totally here for it! Every time I’ve been seeing bread oil, I’m always left drooling so I had to share my take on it.

We’ve all been to those Italian restaurants where they serve you fresh bread alongside an olive oil bread dip right? The bread oil becomes the star of the night and you can't stop eating it!

Well, the good news is that it's so easy to make at home and it's also super customizable too. Here I've used a mix of fresh and dried herbs, olives and of course a good amount of extra-virgin olive oil. I’ve kept it as a vegan recipe, but feel free to add freshly grated parmesan cheese too.

Take it to the next level and serve it with homemade Focaccia and a Limoncello Spritz to make you feel like you’re all the way in Italy!

Share plates are always so fun to serve when entertaining. Trust me when I say, this Bread Dipping Oil will be your new go-to dish that will make all your friends and family want the recipe 🙂

Bread Dipping Oil (3)

Ingredients and Substitutions

  • Extra virgin olive oil is of course the star, I mean you cant have an olive oil bread dip without olive oil right! Because of this, use a good quality oil for the best flavor
  • Balsamic vinegar is added for a touch of acidity and sweetness. If you don't like the taste, add a squeeze of lemon juice instead
  • Olives, I’ve used a mix of green olives and kalamata olives for different colours and flavors. Make sure to buy them pitted which will save you prep time
  • Fresh garlic cloves are grated or minced and won't give the same taste as garlic powder for this recipe. You wont need much unless you love it garlicky
  • Red pepper flakes or chili flakes are added for a kick! I only like to add a pinch, but if you like it spicy feel free to add more. If you aren't a fan of chilli, add some freshly cracked black pepper instead
  • Salt, I recommend adding flaky sea salt as regular salt granules will drop to the bottom of the oil
  • Bread….I mean you can't have an olive oil dip for bread, without a loaf of bread 🙂 For me, the best bread to serve it with is Italian bread such as focaccia to keep the Italian theme. You can of course use other bread such as a french baguette, ciabatta, sourdough breador even crunchy crostini would be amazing!

Herbs

  • Dried oregano is the only dried herb I use as it's stronger in flavor. You can also use italian seasoning
  • Fresh rosemary is my preference but you can use dried too. Thyme is also a great substitute
  • Parsley is one of the herbs I always suggest using fresh. It brings a lovely freshness and pop of colour to the bread oil
  • Basil has the yummiest smell and flavor when it's fresh! I always prefer fresh than dried basil for this oil recipe. It can be a little overpowering though, so I only like to add a few leaves

How to make Bread Dipping Oil

This has to be one of the best appetizer recipes to make and it's all put together in these easy steps below.

Bread Dipping Oil (4)
  1. In a bowl add olive oil and balsamic vinegar
  2. Add finely chopped herbs and olives to the bowl. TIP, if you are not planning to serve straight away, you can prepare all the ingredients ahead of time and add to the bowl right before serving so it's enjoyed fresh
  3. Grate in a garlic clove, add oregano, chili flakes (red pepper flakes) and salt. Stir until well combined. You can also add more olive oil as you prefer as after a while the olives will absorb the olive oil
  4. All there is left to do is serve with some fresh bread. Nothing beats some homemade focaccia to soak up all that flavour!
Bread Dipping Oil (5)

Tips and Tricks

  1. Ensure fresh herbs and olives are diced into tiny pieces. This way, you'll be able to have a taste of all the different flavors with every bite! Also if they’re in large chunks, it will be harder to use as a dipping oil
  2. Add the herbs and ingredients to the olive oil when its ready to be served. Its best to eat it when its nice and fresh and also at room temperature
  3. Add more olive oil if you need to as once its been sitting out for a while, you’ll notice the olives will start to absorb the oil. To be honest, it wont even last that long though, haha
  4. Make a little extra and use it as a salad dressing! Yep I'm not kidding, its so good with a crunchy salad and vegetables with a little extra vinegar or lemon juice
Bread Dipping Oil (6)

FAQs

Which olive oil is best for bread dipping?

Its best to use a good quality extra virgin olive oil that's rich and bold in flavor. It's the main ingredient in a bread oil so it makes a huge difference

How long does bread dipping oil last?

As I’ve used fresh herbs and garlic in my olive oil bread dip, it's best to be eaten when its fresh. The herbs will lose their vibrant colour and flavor and the garlic can spoil. To make it last longer, use dried herbs and use garlic powder instead as they have a longer shelf life

Can you make bread dipping oil ahead of time?

Yes you can!Don’t mix the ingredients into the oil until its ready to be served for the best results

This oil is incredible! I served it with fresh homemade sourdough that was still warm from the oven and it was amazing. Next time will try with focaccia. I added parmesan and it was perfect but I can imagine it would be delicious without it too. This will be my go-to starter for whenever I have friends over for dinner now, and I am going to use it as a salad dressing as well as it has so much fresh flavour. Thank you Ayeh for another amazing recipe! ❤️

*Be warned this recipe will have you being invited to parties and family BBQ, just so you can bring dipping oil and fresh bread for guests to enjoy*

Paired with fresh bread, or if you have the time to make focaccia (which is superb) this dipping oil is a crowd pleaser. The fresh herbs, and sour pops of olives make it and entree to serve. Believe me, people will be asking for the recipe after - it’s just that good and simple!

Warning: this dipping oil is HIGHLY ADDICTIVE! We made this on Christmas Eve, along with the Focaccia, and it was amazing. Since my kids are olive-averse, we made dipping oil version 2 by replacing the olives with sun dried tomatoes, artichoke hearts and capers. Later, I made grilled cheese sandwiches with this dipping oil spread on the outside or the bread and I was a hero for yet another quick and easy meal.

If using fresh herbs and garlic, its best eaten fresh. But if you use dried herbs and spices, it will be fine 🙂
