Easy Texas Toast (2)

Pillowy, crisp, and buttery, Texas toast is barbecue’s answer to garlic bread, ready for mopping up every last bit of braised brisket or beans. If you’ve never had the pleasure of eating Texas toast, here’s what you can expect: Thick slices of soft white bread are coated on both sides with peppery garlic butter, then each slab is toasted or grilled until golden and crisp. Every bite boasts a soft, buttery interior and a crackled, caramelized, garlicky crust.

Luckily you don’t have to travel to Texas for this delectable toast. All you need is a loaf of white bread and a few kitchen staples.

Preheat the Baking Pan for Crispier Texas Toast

Many barbecue joints use a griddle or specialty toaster to make Texas toast, but all you need is a sturdy baking sheet that heats while you prep the bread. Preheating the baking sheet also eliminates the need to flip the toast.

Texas toast bread (enriched square white bread) is pretty easy to find in the South — both pre-sliced and in whole loaves. Outside of the South it can be harder to come by, so you have two options: Ask your grocery store bakery for an unsliced loaf of white sandwich bread, or buy a loaf of soft Italian bread and use that instead. Thick slices of bread are what give Texas toast its unique texture, so you’ll want to cut the loaf yourself.

    olive oil

  • 5 cloves

    garlic, minced

  • 1/2 teaspoon

    dried parsley
