How old is IXL? ›

2007. In 2007, we introduced IXL, a groundbreaking platform and curriculum for K–12 math education. IXL gives districts, schools, and teachers everything they need to make a bigger positive impact on learning for every student.

Paul founded IXL Learning in 1998 as a way to explore the potential for Web-based technologies in education. A former software engineer, he built and launched the initial version of the company's first product, which allowed teachers to create and share interactive study materials.

IXL offers comprehensive coverage of pre-K through 12th grade curriculum, with more than 10,000 skills aligned to the Common Core and all 50 state standards.

IXL has over 5,000 skill plans that are perfectly aligned to standards, textbooks, and high-stakes assessments. IXL provides over 3,000 video tutorials that teach students math and English language arts concepts, including phonics and reading. Kids have 600 educational games to play while learning math and English.

Teaching students with ADHD, dyslexia and other learning differences requires a highly individualized approach. High school math teacher Barbara Knight found that implementing IXL Math and the Real-Time Diagnostic in her classroom was key in differentiating instruction for students with special needs.

While it claims to enhance learning outcomes, there is growing concern about its negative impact on students' emotional well-being. This essay argues that IXL can make people sad due to its excessive focus on repetitive tasks, lack of personalization, and potential for fostering unhealthy competition.

How did IXL get its name? ›

The source of IXL's unusual name is disputed. A 2012 article on the town's website explained that the name derived from Indian Exchange Land, a reference to the town being on Mvskoke land. Other sources claim that the letters were taken from the names of three men.

A skill is mastered when the SmartScore reaches 100, but the number of questions it takes to master a skill varies with every student. To continuously motivate students, IXL recommends setting other practice milestones along the way to mastery. A score of 80 is proficient, and a score of 90 is considered excellent.

A student's diagnostic level represents their working grade level. So a level of 400 represents a readiness to start working on 4th-grade skills, and a level of 450 means the student is about halfway through the 4th-grade curriculum.
